History

The origins of MetLife originate to 1863 when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 to found national Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. In 1868, the company made a decision to focus on the life insurance business. A new company was formed to sell insurance to the middle class, and MetLife was born. By 1909 MetLife had become the nation’s largest life insurance in terms of insurance in force.

In 2000, MetLife transformed itself from a mutual company to stock ownership and launched the seventh largest initial public offering (IPO) ever held in the United States. When the tragic events of September 11, 2001, shook the nation, MetLife responded by investing $1 billion in a broad array of publicly-traded common stocks. In 2005, MetLife acquired Travelers life & Annuity making MetLife the largest individual life insurer in North America based on sales.
